We couldn't figure out what this set of cylinders was for at the time, but a friend later explained that they are ceremonial sake barrels (called taru sake), donated by various saki breweries to the temple.
Trivia of the day -- technically, sake is a beer since it is fermented from grain, not a wine (which is fermented from fruit)
